Rental Car Mitigation Fees

In 1993 the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) adopted the Rental Car Mitigation Fee Program in Chapter 95 of the TRPA Code of Ordinances to assist in the achievement and maintenance of environmental thresholds for transportation, water quality, and air quality.

The fees collected this year will provide the operating funds for the Tahoe Transportation District. The Rental Car Mitigation Fee program began in December of 1993 and applies to each rental transaction in which the rental car is rented by, or delivered to, a person in the Tahoe Basin. Each rental transaction shall be assessed a mitigation fee for each day the car is rented, with exception for local residents who can show residency by the address on a valid Drivers License. As stated in Chapter 95, this fee shall be adjusted annually, consistent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the San Francisco region.

The 2009 increase to $5.50 was presented and approved at the January 9, 2009 TTD Board Meeting.
